Description
In 5-7-5: a daily haiku journal, Lisa Vihos marks the passage of time through the most observational of all poetic forms: haiku. Her daily poems are rooted in the natural surroundings of her Wisconsin home, and while her portraits of daily life can be personal and introspective, all are evidence of universal experience. Through sun and clouds, joy and sorrow, Vihos reminds us of the transience of the natural world and life itself. This journal urges readers to seize the pen and write the day, for one year or up to four.

What a gift this collection is. 5-7-5: a daily haiku journal is an invitation to meditate through poetry, and Lisa Vihos shows us the way. Whether you take up a pen to write your own daily haiku or only spend a moment each day with Lisa’s poems, this book will remind you that life is more than the noise around us.

Poetry has never been in my creative wheelhouse, but I have gotten such pleasure writing a haiku a day using poet Lisa Vihos’ daily haiku journal. I’ve never managed to maintain a gratitude journal. Somehow framing the many things I have to be grateful for in a list always felt forced and insincere. But somehow, capturing an observation or describing my feelings in 17 syllables captures their essence, makes them feel significant, and leaves me happy and grateful I saw or felt them. A completely unexpected response. If you have any inclination to record your year in an evocative new way, I highly recommend this journal. Each page includes a haiku from Lisa from her year of this practice, so you don’t feel alone as you start. You can start this practice anytime of the year! Why wait for pleasure?
